5.0 out of 5 stars So Light and Surprisingly Roomy!, September 14, 2011

I spent several weeks researching one-person tents and found the lightest and most affordable to be the MSR Hubba, Sierra Design's Lightning XT1, Eureka's Back Country 1 and the ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 1. Both the Zephyr and Back Country were relatively inexpensive ($100-130), both were large for a solo tent (23-24 sq ft each), and both weighed approx 4 pounds. The Eureka is very popular judging from the ample positive online reviews, but I didn't like the fly designs of either of these tents. The ALPS has a top triangle that purportedly catches water and the Eureka's barely extends past the door.

On to the Hubba and Lightning. Both were similar prices ($200-250) and had similar space (Hubba - 17 and Lightning - 19 sq ft). Both weighed in at 3 lbs 6 ozs but the Lightning's width at 32" seemed more friendly than MSR's 26". The Hubba is the most popular of the two but there were a few reviewers who gave a thumbs down on the narrow width. Unfortunately, I found almost no... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional in every way, September 19, 2011

I struggled for a long time trying to find the best (for me) solo camping tent. I like to travel light, but like my creature comforts, which are normally competing priorities. This tent nails the sweet spot perfectly. Below are some (qualitative) specific thoughts.

- Size & Weight: The thing is significantly lighter than I expected. The tent itself takes about as much room in my backpack as an MRE (meal, ready-to-eat, which is my normal dining choice). The pole comes in a separate bag (which fits into the tent bag) and are fairly long, so I ended up strapping them to the side of my pack. The stakes are small and light and perfect for my woodland trips (though I think they would be pretty worthless in sandier terrain).
- Room: One of my biggest concerns in choosing a tent was comfort, just in case I had to spend hours inside waiting out a storm. This tent's design is such that I can easily sit upright (I measure 5'-10") without touching the top. There was plenty of room... Read more

So I have been hiking and camping for 40 years. Last tent was too small inside (Macpac Microlight), previous tent was great but now too heavy (Bibler Awhwani). Just bought the Hubba v5. Haven't used it yet in the field but can confirm for a big 6' 2" guy it is long and high enough for me! Setup in the lounge room was a breeze. Will test in the field in 2 weeks. But it looks like 'the goods'.
I will purchase the HP inner as well so then I will have a summer and non-storm winter tent.
